Setting the standard in Six Sigma training and support

What is Six Sigma

Six Sigma is a proven way to improve your business or organization. Six Sigma is a disciplined, structured and data driven approach to problem solving. Six Sigma is commonly defined as 3.4 defects per million opportunities.

It's a fact you cannot mange what you cannot measure, or, as former GE Co. CEO Jack Welch says, "If you're not measuring it, it's just a hobby.'

Statistical tools associated with Six Sigma are not new. The background for use of these tools stretches back to post WWII management science efforts by the United States to aid in rebuilding Japanese manufacturing. This effort evolved into the Total Quality efforts of the 1970s and 1980s. Six Sigma successes can be clearly seen in the significant changes in companies like Motorola, Allied Signal, GE, and Honeywell over the past decade.

The difference between Six Sigma and other quality methods is that it accurately measures improvement. This data-driven approach quantitatively proves how a process is performing. To achieve Six Sigma, a process must not produce more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities. A Six Sigma defect is defined as anything outside of customer specifications. A Six Sigma opportunity is then the total quantity of chances for a defect.

The objective of Six Sigma is the implementation of a data-based strategy that focuses on process improvement and variation reduction through the application of principals that includes these stages:

  • Define
  • Measure
  • Analyze
  • Improve
  • Control

Sigma processes are executed by Six Sigma Green Belts and Six Sigma Black Belts, and are overseen by Six Sigma Master Black Belts.
